To whom it may concern,

I am a current graduate student of the Dept. of Educational Psychology at UW-Madison. I would like to show my strong interest in the position of project assistant at the Division of International Academic Programs (IAP) and apply for it. Given my profound background and experiences in similar position, I believe I am a perfect match to this position. Therefore, I am willing to list my credentials since I consider myself as a strong candidate of this position:

Experiences and knowledge in student services. Student affair and services have been one of my professional expertises for more than 3 years. To date, I have accumulated abundant working and research experiences in college student services. For example, I have volunteered at Greater University Tutor Services for almost a year, where I directly interact with undergraduates and offer them assistances to improve their study skills. In addition, my previous empirical research experience and current minor study has equipped me with plenty of knowledge and sensitivity to target and meet college students’ needs in different aspects. In short, my experiences and knowledge in higher education student service will be a great asset to IAP.

Familiarity with various working styles. I have been trained to be detail-oriented and comfortable with collaborative as well as independent work. During my previous work in Harvard University, I have managed a huge database of teachers’ learning record including about 20,000 cases and more than 500 variables, which indicates my strong ability to handle the huge amount of important information. Another job of mine at Center on Education and Work of UW-Madison requires certain amount of group and individual work, and I have completed all the deadline-oriented assigned projects with excellent feedback from my supervisors. According to the description above, I have strong confidence that adjusting myself to new tasks and working environment like IPA in a short period of time can be definitely achievable without any problem.

Understanding of studying abroad. As an international student myself, I have first-hand experiences coping with various challenges of studying abroad. I have proved that not only can I handle my work but also prosper academically (being admitted to Harvard University and UW-Madison) and career-wise (seamlessly working in different academic institutions). Moreover, I am dedicated to assisting other international students, and my involvement in one of the international student organizations allows me to offer a helping hand to fellow international students. My knowledge in multiple languages (Chinese, English, Spanish, and German) will definitely be a huge additional advantage as a PA in IAP.

In summary, based on my enriched experiences and background relevant to the nature and requirement of this position, I believe I am a strong candidate of this position, which will benefit me as much as I contribute to your project. If you would like to further discuss this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Hsun-yu Chan

  1. I would edit your first paragraph further; the shorter, the better!

My background and experiences in [xxx] (whatever field/positions you've held] make me a perfect match for this position: "
